Plagerism
Okay, I suppose it's kind of an ironic question since, technically speaking, fanfic writers are stealing someone elses' characters to use. But, mostly, plot and whatnot are orignal, thus the entire concept of fanfic. So, why steal someone elses?
I understand that, when you read an amazing story, you truly wish it was your own work. I know I've read countless plots where I just stop and think wow, if only I could come up with something that good. But, case-in-fact, I didn't write that story and probably never would have thought of it. And I certainly never would think to steal the story. First off, someone will notice; fanfic is too large of a community not to have someone out there put two and two together. Second, it's a false claim of goodness (yup that word doesn't make sense there, oh well). I would rather have someone tell me my story is good/sucks and know that I am the one who wrote it or has the power to change it. What on earth is the point of getting a review that says "good job" if it wasn't you job?
Further, I think what I love most about being a fanfic writer is the ability to discuss my plot choices with someone. Posting another person's story, you lose that since it's not your plot.
Who knows. I know that I get inspiration from other people's writing and handling of characters. Everyone hadnles people differently and its great to get different takes on how a character could be protrayed. Take someone like Thranduil for instance: half out there protray him as a cruel father while the other half protray him as a proud and kind dad. Or Obi-Wan who half the time loves Anakin like a son and the other half of the time resents him. It's difference like that that make being a fanfic author fun and interesting and your own.
So, yes, this was a ramble, but I just put it out there because I was annoyed and confused about it all. Makes ya wonder how often someone reads something another person wrote and takes credit. Makes ya a little sad too I supose.
